About the Encyclopedia of Tools

What is this website?

The Encyclopedia of Tools is an online resource with information about tools of many kinds. Right now the focus is mostly on electric power tools from major brands. Tools that are no longer sold are also included. More brands  and more specialized tool categories will eventually be added.

Why is X not on here?

Either because we have not gotten around to it yet, or it should not be here. The goal is to be a comprehensive encyclopedia but it will take years to get to a point where only the most common tools are listed.

I found a mistake somewhere. What do I do?

Please report any spelling errors, borked sentences and factual errors. Please include the complete URL with your message.

Can you help me find/repair/choose a tool?

Probably not. All information we have on the tools in this website is listed or in the links. If it's not already on the website we probably don't know it.

How can I help?

To help write pages about old tools that are no longer for sale we can use scans or PDFs of old brochures of tool manufacturers that contain pictures and specifications.

When is the website updated?

This website is a continious work in progress. There is no regular update schedule. It may happen multiple time per day or once a month.

Can you link to my video or page?

You are free to submit suggestions for pages to link to. For links on tool pages the linked page should contain relevant information. Not just any page where the tool is offered for sale or included in some kind of "top 10" list.

For videos the featured tool should be demonstrated by using it. A video of unboxing and waving it around is usually not considered interesting enough to link to.

Why does this website look the way it does?

Just like with a good tool, usability, function, performance and reliability are given priority over aestatics. This website is not meant to be pretty. It is meant to be useful by providing the reader with the information as fast and readable as possible.
