GSR 18V-150 C drill

Drilling & fastening Cordless 18V Drill

The GSR 18V-150 C is a heavy duty cordless drill manufactured by Bosch as part of the Bosch Professional product line.

The machine has a brushless electric motor that is powered by a 18 volt battery.

With a maximum torque of 150 Nm this machine is suitable for drilling large holes.

Exterior

The machine has dark blue plastic housing with black rubberized parts around the handle for improved grip and along the motor housing to act as bumpers.

The machine has red accents for the controls and logo.

On the bottom of the handle a 18 volt battery attaches by sliding in from the front.

A plastic bit holder for four bits and a metal belt clip can be attached on the left and right side.

Above the battery is a white LED that illuminates the working area. Around it are membrane buttons for electronic angle detection and kickback control.

On front of the handle is a red trigger switch. Above it is a red push button to reverse the direction of rotation on each side.

On top of the housing is a red gear selector switch. In front of that is a black mode selector switch with symbols of a for drill and screw, where the drill setting disables the clutch.

In front of the mode selector is a ring around which the rotatable auxiliary handle is attached.

In front of that is a black clutch setting ring with 25 settings. At the front is a black metal chuck with a maximum opening of 13 mm.

Safety

While the clutch can be used to prevent kickback it may not always be used when doing a job that requires high torque. Since this machine can deliver up to 150 Nm of torque a sudden jam can cause the operator to lose control.

While other high torque drills often come with an auxiliary handle  to provide more control this machine has a kickback control feature that works with an built in accelerator that will detect a sudden twisting motion and then disengage the motor to prevent losing control and potential injury to the operator.

A red LED at the bottom of the handle will light up if kickback control caused the motor to shut down. The button under it toggles the kickback control safety feature on and off.

Operation

The machine works as a standard drill. It is activated by pressing the variable speed trigger switch. The push button above it can be used to reverse the turning direction or as a trigger lock when the button is centered.

The hammer, drill or screwing mode is selected by turning the ring behind it. The resistance of the clutch is adjusted with the ring directly behind the chuck. The clutch is only active in the screwing mode.

The gear can be selected with the sliding switch on top of the body.

Electronic Angle Detection (AED)

This machine has an unique feature that helps the operator orient it at specific angles. On the base of the handle there is an angle button with three markings for 45 and 60 degrees and an smartphone icon that defaults to 90 degrees but can be changed using an app on on a smartphone.

After pushing the button to select an angle the machine has to be calibrated by placing it with the bottom of the battery against the surface and holding it still. The AED LED will light up green for once second when this done. If not held still enough the calibration will stop after 10 seconds.

After calibration the machine can be moved into position. A LED on the top of the motor housing if the machine is held at the desired angle. When within 10 degrees it will light up yellow, when within 3 degrees it will light up green. The machine can then be used to drill at the desired angle.

Bluetooth connectivity

The drill has a built-in wireless communication module in the handle that uses Bluetooth to connect to the Bosch Toolbox app on a smartphone to adjust some settings, including a user defined angle for the third angle preset.

The module is located behind a round over on the side of the handle. The cover can be opened by twisting it with a coin. The module can be removed so that the machine can also be used in environments where wireless communications are restricted.
