2540-20 M12 pin nailer

Cordless Drilling & fastening M12 Nailer Pin nailer

The 2540-20 is a cordless pin nailer for the M12 battery system manufactured by Milwaukee.

It was introduced in 2021 and was the first nailer in the M12 battery system. It can drive up to 750 nails with a 1.5 Ah battery.

The machine is used to drive pin nails (nails without a head) with a diameter of 23 gauge (0.58 mm) in wood.

It uses a nitrogen air spring mechanism to drive the nail. By using a spring loaded mechanism there is no delay between pressing the trigger and shooting the nail.

Milwaukee does not specify how many nails can be driven per second continuously but it seems the machine can keep up during intense use.

Because the presence of compressed air inside the machine is not user serviceable on the inside. Milwaukee does not recommend disassembly and states that it could void the warranty on the service parts list.

Exterior

The machine has a red plastic housing with a black rubberized back and front of the handle.

An M12 battery is inserted in the bottom of the handle. The handle attaches to the rest of the machine at the top and bottom.

On the lower part there are are four LEDs on the left side that act as a battery charge indicator. Milwaukee calls this the "fuel gauge". In front of it is a threaded hole in which a metal belt clip can be screwed in on either side.

The motor and gear housing are positioned vertically at the front of the handle with the air spring mechanism horizontally along the top of the body.

At the front, on top is an LED light that illuminates the working area.

At the front of the machine is a black nail magazine. The magazine has a collation angle of zero degrees, meaning that is straight and the nails that can be used are connected to each other without any offset.

The nails are pushed up with a spring. There are openings on the sides through which they are visible and the top one acts as a reload indicator that allows the operator to see when the nails are almost used up.

At the very front of the machine is a red "non marring" precision tip that has a very small contact area to allow the operator to see where the nail will end up. The machine comes with a a spare tip.

Operation

The machine fires a nail by pulling the black trigger on the handle. The trigger can only be pressed when the black spring loaded safety lever under it has been pushed down with another finger.

To load nails in the magazine It has a button on the bottom to slide down one side to insert nails.

On the top, on right side of the magazine (not visible in picture) there is a black drive depth adjustment dial that can be used to adjust the depth of the nails based on the hardness of the material they are being used on.

When a nail is jammed in the machine or the striker does not retract the top of the magazine has be removed to clear it. A hex key is needed for this and is stored on the right side of the magazine (not visible in picture).
