2485-20 M12 right angle die grinder

Cordless Die grinder Grinding M12 FUEL

The 2485-20 is a cordless die grinder manufactured by Milwaukee. It is part of their high performance FUEL product line.

The machine has a brushless motor and is powered by a 12 volt M12 battery.

The tool is advertised as an alternative for pneumatic die grinders that can work in tight spots where an air hose would get in the way.

According to Milwaukee the machine is most suited for using 50 mm (2") accessories. Promotional pictures show the machine being used with sanding discs on metal parts.

Exterior

The machine has a red plastic body. The top is shaped like a horizontal cylinder. And the handle a black rubberized vertical cylinder. An M12 battery is inserted in the bottom of the handle.

On the front of the handle is a large black metal paddle switch with integrated lock off button.

On the side of the handle are four red LEDs that act as a battery charge indicator. Milwaukee calls this the "fuel gauge".

At the bottom handle is an LED light shining upwards to illuminate the working area.

The motor housing on top contains a motor that directly drives the spindle without a gearbox. On the back there is a mode selector with a membrane button (not visible in picture).

On the front is a collet with a maximum diameter of 1/4" (6.25 mm) that can hold the shank of a small grinding wheel other accessory.

Operation

The machine is activated by pressing the variable speed trigger switch on the front of the handle. The integrated lock off switch has to be pushed towards the top first.

The rotation speed can be selected with the mode selector button the back of the motor housing. By pressing it repeatedly one of the numbers 1 though 4 around it will light up to indicate the mode. The modes have the following RPM ranges:

  1. 0 -10000
  2. 0 -15000
  3. 0 - 20000
  4. 0 - 24500

Because the spindle spins at a high RPM the accessory in the collet needs to be firmly secured. To change the accessory both of the two included wrenches are needed. One to hold the spindle in place and one to loosen and tighten the hex nut at the tip.

The shank of the accessory should be inserted at least 25 mm (1") and about 13 mm (1/2") of the shaft should be exposed to prevent vibrations and the accessory getting loose.
