STAR Protection Computer Controls™ is a communication technology introduced in 2015 by Makita to allow batteries and machines in the LXT 18V battery system communicate with each other.

The data shared between tyhe machine and battery can be used to detect overheating or other situations which might damage the machine or battery. The machine will then shut down when such an overload is detected.

The battery can be recognized by yellow plastic tab around the electrical contacts and a star symbol on top. A compatible machine also has yellow plastic around the contacts and a star symbol near the battery connection.

The batteries and machines have additional electric contacts over which the communication signal is transferred.
