20V MAX Cordless Drilling & fastening Hammer drill

The DCD797B is a cordless hammer drill manufactured by DeWalt.

The machine has a brushless electric motor that is powered by a 20V MAX battery.

According to DeWalt the machine can drill holes up to 7/8" (22 mm) in wood with an auger bit, 1-2/8" (35 mm) with a self feed drill and and 2" (50 mm) holes using a hole saw attachment.

The machine has a unique spotlight feature allowing the machine to be used as a rudimentary work light.

Wireless connectivity

The machine is very similar to the DCD796B in appearance and specifications but adds wireless connectivity using Bluetooth that allows it to connect to DeWalts ToolConnect app from which various settings like the RPM in each gear and duration and brightness of the work light can be adjusted.

The wireless connectivity also allows the location of the tool to be tracked.

Exterior

The machine body is made out of yellow plastic with the much of handle and back side covered in black rubber.

DeWalt classifies this machine as a compact and lightweight drill/driver,

On the bottom of the handle a 20V MAX battery attaches by sliding in from the front. A  metal belt clip can be attached on the left on either side, and a a bit holder on the other side. On the left side there is a blue "wireless" icon.

Above the battery is a white LED that is angled upward to illuminate the working area. behind the LED is a switch that controls the rightness and how long the LED stays on.

On front of the handle is a black trigger switch. Above that is a black push button to reverse the direction of rotation on each side.

Above that is a clutch setting ring with 15 settings. At the front is a black keyless chuck with a maximum opening of 13 mm.

On top of the housing is a black gear selector switch.

Operation

The machine works as a standard drill. It is activated by pressing the variable speed trigger switch. The push button above it can be used to reverse the turning direction or as a trigger lock when the button is centered.

The resistance of the clutch is adjusted with the ring behind the chuck. The drill or hammer mode can be selected by turning the ring further so that the indicator triangle is aligned with the drill or hammer symbol.

The gear can be selected with the sliding switch on top of the body.

The work light switch has a setting low, medium which will stay on for 20 seconds after the trigger is released. The third "spotlight" mode will stay on for 20 minutes. The brightness and duration can be adjusted with the ToolConnect app.
