The HP1640 is a corded electric hamer drill manufactured by Makita.

he body of the machine is plastic with a "Makita teal" color. The back of the handle is black and rubberized to provide better grip. On the front side of the handle there is black trigger switch to activate the machine. Behind it is a small black round lock on button to lock the trigger in the "on" position without needing to keep pressing it.

 A switch to reverse the direction of rotation is located on the side of the body above the trigger switch.

On the top of the body near the front is a sliding witch to toggle the hammer mode. The hammer mode allows for faster drilling in masonry like bricks. The manual states the hammer mode should be used for drilling in concrete, grantite.

On the front of the machine a side handle can be attached that can be rotated all the way around. A depth gauge is attached to the side handle.

The metal chuck is keyed and can fit drill bits up to 13 mm in diameter.
