GS5000 125mm straight grinder

The GS5000 is a corded electric straight grinder manufactured by Makita.

The machine is powered by 750 watt brushed motor from an outlet. Depending on the region it is sold in the cord has an appropriate power plug and voltage rating for 120 and 230 volt outlets.

The GS5000 shares its user manual with the GS6000 which is the same machine but with a larger 150 mm wheel guard, which also makes it slightly heavier.

Exterior

The machine has a "Makita teal" colored plastic motor housing with the word "Makita" printed in white on the side. Behind it is a black round cover to access the motor brushes with some horizontal ventilation slits behind it. Makita sells an optional dust cover kit for use in dusty environments that is placed  over the slits to prevent dust from getting in the motor housing.

On the back is a handle with black rubberized  top and bottom. The power cord is attached to at the end of the handle. On the bottom side there is large black trigger switch.

On top of the machine, in the middle is an aluminium hanger bracket where an optional neck cord can be attached.

In front of the motor housing is a black rubberized "neck" which is narrow enough to wrap a hand around and can be used as a handle.

At the very front is a M14 spindle, or 1/2" in countries where that is more common. The spindle is surrounded with a black metal wheel guard large enough to fit around a 125 mm wheel.

Operation

The machine is activated by pushing the black trigger on the underside of the handle. In front of the trigger is a lock on/off lever which can be pushed backward towards the trigger to keep the machine running without needing to hold the trigger down. When pushed forward it prevents the trigger from being activated.

The front of the wheel guard can be flipped up by loosening the wingnuts on the sides. Adjusting the position of the wheel guard requires a hex key that can be stored in a holder on the power cord.
