Metabo product naming conventions explained

Metabo products usually start with a letter followed with some letters and numbers.

The first letter indicates the type of tool, usually based on the German word for that type of tool.

The "Quick" suffix

Many Metabo tools have the word "QUICK" at the end of their name. These products are usually a little bit more expensive than the variant that does not have it.

The difference is that the "Quick" tool has some kind of time saving feature. It differs per product but usually it means that there is way to change a drill bit, chuck, saw blade or cutting disc without needing any additional tools.

Air powered tools

Air powered tools that are connected to an air compressor start with "D".

Angle grinders

Metabo Angle grinders start with "W" from "winkelschleifer" which means angle grinder in German.

  • W = angle grinder
  • E = electric
  • V = variable speed
  • B = brake
  • A = auto balancer
  • P = paddle switch
  • RT = rat tail handle
  • HT = high torque
  • INOX = optimized for working with stainless steel
  • DS = drop safe, has a metal ring to attach a safety cord

After the letters there are some numbers; for angle grinders it is usually a number identifing the series followed by the disc diameter in millimiters.

For example: WEV 17-150 Quick is an electric angle grinder with variable speed setting with a cutting disc of 150 millimeter where the disc can be replaced without any tools.

Drills

Drills start with a "B" for "Bohrmachine" in German.

  • B = drill
  • D = D-handle shape body
  • E = electric
  • V = variable speed

The number after the letters is sometimes the wattage that the machine consumes and the maximum rated hole diameter for drilling in steel.

For example: BE 500-10 is a 500 Watt electric drill that can drill up to 10 mm holes in steel.
