The housing of the saw is made out of "Makita teal" colored plastic with black rubberized front and grip.

The machine has a D-hande shape with the power cord permanently attached on the bottom of the grip.

On the top side of the bottom of the handle there is a red speed selection dial for setting the maximum strokes per minute. The number of strokes per minute is electronically controlled so that each stroke has more torque so that machine will keep sawing at a constant speed as more resistance is encountered.

On the side there is a selector where up to three oribital actions can be selected for faster cutting in wood.

Near the front there is a red button to adjust how far the shoe extends forward. The saw blade can be changed without needing any tools.

On the side there are large letters "AVT" which stands for "Anti Vibration Technology". Inside the machine there is counter weight that moves in opposite direction of the saw to reduce vibrations. According to Makita this halves the amount of vibrations.
