The Makita XGT 40V Max battery system was introduced in Japan in 2019 and in Europe in 2020 and is used for heavy duty machines.
The battery packs contain ten 3.6 volt 18650 Lithium-Ion cells in series to produce 36 volt output. When fully charged the voltage can reach up to 40 volts. That is why this battery system, is marketed as 40 volts maximum but actually has a nominal rating of 36 volt.
The battery packs with ten cells have a similar weight as the LXT 18V battery packs with ten cells, but output a higher voltage, but can only do so for a shorter amount of time. The benefit is that tools using a single LXT 40V Max battery can be lighter and more compact than a tool using the LXT 36V system which requires LXT 18V batteries.
