Makita LXT 36V battery system

The LXT 36V battery system from Makita uses two LXT 18V batteries to double the voltage. It is also sometimes referred to as the LXT 18V X2 system.
The first tool using this system was the rotary hammer BHR261 introduced in 2009.
The system is used for machines where a single 18 volt battery cannot provide enough power.
The benefit of using two batteries is that users who already own LXT 18V batteries for other tools can use LXT 36V tools without having to purchase or transport additional batteries and chargers.
The downside of using two batteries is that it makes the machines bigger and heavier then when a single battery is used. When compatibility with the LXT 18V system is not important the XGT 40V system addresses this issue by delivering similar power in a more compact package.
