The LXT 18V battery system used by Makita power tools was first introduced in 2005. In 2021 there were over 275 tools using this system.

The battery packs contain five 3.6 volt 18650 Lithium-Ion cells in series to produce 18 volt output. When fully charged the voltage can reach up to 20 volts but during use voltage is around 18 volt.

Some high capacity battery packs contain double the mount of cells to increase the capacity, allowing the tool to be used longer.

Some tools require two LXT 18V battery packs. Makita calls this the LXT 36V system.
