The 18 - 36 multivolt system is used by cordless electric Metabo HTP tools. The same batteries can deliver both 18 and 36 depending on the machine they are being used in.

When delivering 18 volt the batteries last longer and when delivering 36 volt they can provide more power.

Like other Lithium Ion battery packs each battery contains a number of cells connected to each other in series. By placing five 3.6 volt cells in series they output 18 volt in total.

Inside the multivolt battery pack there are ten cells with two series of 18 volts. Two series of 18 volts together make 36 volts. When connected parallel it will deliver 18 volts but with double the capacity making the battery charge last twice as long.

Compatibility

Since the Metabo HTP is just a brand name used in North America for Hitachi/Hikoki power tools the 18-36 multivolt system is compatible with their 18 and 36 volt power tools that are sold under the Hitachi/Hikoki brand in other parts of the world.

Since Metabo HTP is different from Metabo the batteries do not work with Metabo's 18 volt battery system or the Cordless Alliance System (CAS) that Metabo using since 2020.
